Common HolidaysThe celebration of the birth of the Buddha is one of the most popular Buddhist holidays. However, depending on the country, the day on which The Buddha’s birth is observed as well as the rituals surrounding the celebrations vary. For example, in South Korea, monk hang hundreds of paper lanterns, representing families, across the monastery. They are often in the shape of lotus-flowers, connecting each building on the temple grounds. At night the families light these humble lanterns with candles in honor the birth of the Buddha. In other parts of the world, monks provide vegetarian meals for the poor on this day.

Though the actual day of New Year celebration varies by country, the date tends to be connected to the appearance of the full moon during specific months. For example, some countries celebrate this holiday three days after the first full moon in January while others celebrate under the full moon in February. The way that this holiday is observed differs but most New Year celebrations include feasting in the company of friends and family. |
